Layton’s boy’s tennis team is hoping to make it to state this year in an effort of recreating their victory from last year’s season. Seniors, Jonah Knight, Grant Gardner and Jensen Cox, all made it to state as juniors – so they know what it takes to compete. As their senior year comes to a close, Knight, Gardner and Cox are working hard to make it to state again, and this time, they want the rest of the team to make it with them.
Captain, Jensen Cox, believes, “Davis has a really good team this year because they didn’t lose any varsity players [from last season].” He also stated, “Viewmont has been really good the last five years. They have always been state champions or close.” Knowing their competition, Layton has had to prepare and work hard in order to claim a successful season.
Stand out athletes on this year’s team include, Junior, Tyler Gibb and Sophomore, Preston Kammeyer. Both players are advanced for their age and play intensive matches. Jonah Knight, captain, said, “Preston Kammeyer is a Sophomore and is playing Number One Single, which is pretty impressive.” A “single” is when one player from each team is playing a match against each other. A double, is when two players from each team play against each other. Playing a single match is generally harder than playing a double, and playing number one single is the top position on the team. For a Sophomore with less experience, it is impressive that Kammeyer is the number one single player.
With every great team, there are also weaknesses. When asked what weaknesses the team could improve on, Knight stated, “. . . doubles. That’s a huge weakness.” With the correct effort and work, there is a positive hope that the team will continue to improve and turn their weaknesses into strengths. Coach, Robert Spencer, jested that the team’s only weakness is that, “They get jealous over each other’s girlfriends too easily. Sometimes they’re like little girls.” Now that might be something the team will have to work on . . . off the court.
When considering the team’s strengths this season, Spencer said, “They’re good dudes. They don’t always have to be commanded to do what’s right at all times. They’re where they’re supposed to be, when they’re supposed to be there. They’re pretty loyal.” With this comment from the coach, it is easy to see why the tennis team tends to be so successful. Not only do these team members play well, their respect, stamina and morals help to create a successful team and strong season. Cox says in agreement, “We have really good team unity.” Here we learn once again that it is not athletic ability that makes a team successful, but players who are integral, responsible, and supportive, who makes a team great.
