There’s a party going on in town! Where? Layton High School! Marking a half century of existence, Layton High will be celebrating throughout the school year remembering where their roots first began and imagining possibility in the future. Opening its doors in 1966 to only a sophomore and junior class, Layton was the third high school to be built in Davis County. The first physical structure included the present first and second floor; however, students walked outside and across a grass field to get to the gymnasium. Presently, the school has seen a renovation of its library, childcare, commons and weight room with additional gyms being added and a new wing on the north side of the building.
Many teachers at Layton High were once Lancers themselves. Ms. Ferrin played soccer, basketball and softball. She took 4 region titles in Soccer and Basketball and 2 state titles in Soccer. She continued using her talent on the UVU Basketball team and later on the WSU Soccer team. Mrs. Vowles was in all the sports. She took all state in all sports. She was the on the first soccer team and softball team. She was the student of the year. Which the teachers voted on. Mrs. Vowles said “The basketball team took state in 1988.” Also school pride was a big thing. Ms. Barlow was in yearbook and student government. Mr. Spencer was in FFA, and sports like football. In 1971 they BUILT the auditorium. Before that students used the gym as an auditorium. Unfortunately there were no girl sports then. There were only 425 in his graduating class. Ms. Halbasch was a yearbook editor, volleyball player and sterling scholar. She was a sophomore when 9/11 occurred. Ms. Weekes was in debate. Jim Bachelor played football and baseball. He was also the homecoming king. “We did not have a block schedule,” said Bachelor. They only had 6 periods and they only had to get 18 credits to graduate. And they had two lunches. Steve Bachelor who is a brother to Jim Bachelor was in football, baseball was in the Layton band. Mr. Fager was in football and wrestling. In football he was a center and a defensive tackle. He was a state champ twice in wrestling. “The football team was a great team.” Ms. Eggli was in Key Club and was on the yearbook staff. Mr. Reisback said “Everything stay the same. That’s what I love about this place.” Mr. Adams was in the first graduating class which was in 1969. Mr. Adams with his friends created the group Laytones. This is the choir group we have today. Mr. Adams said “There were only 8 cheerleaders, 4 boys and 4 girls.” Back then Davis High and Layton High were friends not rivalries. Mr. Adams said that the teacher would carry around scissors. So if the guys would have to long of hair they would just cut if off. Mr. Adams said “Me and my friends were the first boys in the home economics class.” The student council Mr. Adams was in established that Layton high would be the Lancers. Mr. Adams said “It was in between the Lancers or the Longhorns.” Last they had a lot of Layton High pride when Mr. Adams went to school here.
In addition the school has only been under the care of three principals. I don’t recall who the first principal was, but the second principal was Paul C. Smith and then presently, Mr. Ryck Astle.
So in conclusion Layton has changed throughout the years. But in all these years it has gone through Layton Highs is still the same, united, strong and committed school. And it also has great potential. But Layton High is going in a great direction.
