To us skaters, skating is more than just a hobby for keeping active. Skating is life. It is a passion that can only be explained to another skater. This passion compels people to keep skating. To a skater, long roads are adventurous seas waiting to be conquered, but pushing that board requires control and creativity.
"I got my first Enjoi board when I was nine years old and it went HARD IN THE PAINT. I love to skate for the adrenaline rush and gnarly crashes. Sure, it hurts like heck, but it doesn’t stop me. I’ve broken too many boards to quit," said homie, J-Dizzle, a LHS Junior.
Longboarding and skateboarding is a reflection of who you really are. Landing a new trick or bombing a gnarly hill gives a skater an endless thrill and desire to get better. No matter how many slams, skaters will always get back up and keep trying. There are no rules, only happy faces and good times, and that is why skaters keep skating.
Although many skaters feel like their board is the only thing they need, there are also people who only use the wood and wheels for transportation. Isaiah says he used to be good at skating, but after six years he decided it wasn’t his style so the board is only used for transportation.
Skating is often started and inspired at a young age, which could later lead to becoming a professional. "I started skating at ten years old and have never loved an inanimate object as much as I loved my first Black Label board.
My dad initially inspired me to skate and I’ve slowly been getting better. I skate almost every day," said Garak Christoferson.
Longboarding is like an urban subcultural thing for me. I live for the high speeds and thrills when I’m cruising around on my longboard. I’ve had my Sector N9ne Blue Goddess for seven years and have not loved anything so much, especially because it is a one hundred fifty dollar board alone!
Since I initially got my board, I’ve witnessed longboards become more and more popular, as well as expensive. A Sector N9ne complete board could cost somebody around three hundred dollars! Good wheels and bearings cost around sixty dollars, and the trucks can be worth even more than that. You may think that just a simple board isn’t worth it, but buy a comfortable complete, and you won’t be able to say the same.
The world seems to stand still as you ride past it. You are in control. You are the Master transferring the weight of your body to find reach your desired destination.
Constant motion is your best friend and loss of motion creates loss of control. The feeling of wind against your body is unexplainable bliss. Longboards flow, we like flow.
