In a theatre performance there are the actors, dancers, singers, but many forget a crucial element of a theater is the Stage Crew. Layton High’s Stage Crew also called, “Stage Hands” work behind the scenes during theatrical, music or other live performances including the assemblies to ensure scene changes and other tasks are done correctly and at the right time. Stage Crew members are well educated in being able to maneuver lights, audio machinery, and to create the sets needed for the productions on stage. Stage crew members may have to work many different positions backstage including helping with lighting and audio soundboard equipment and props but it is to help keep the production become a great outcome.
From Manager of Production Company and senior Emily Auton said,”I like working in stage crew because my favorite thing to do is to work with the actors and be their friend, and be able to help them with the production, “and continued saying,” I have been doing stage crew halfway through my
sophomore year and it has almost been two and a half years and have learned to
use the sound and lighting equipment.
Members of the stage crew can either sign up for the class of be after school help. It sometimes may require the members to be willing to work longer hours than the other students. Stage crew requires a person to be diligent, and determined, and dedicated to get the stage hand jobs done to ensure the performance is a success. Each member of the stage crew usually is assigned one or more tasks to carry out during the production to keep the chores in order.
From Manager of Acting Company and senior Lara Wayman said,” You really don’t need any experience or skills, everything you will learn will be taught in the class. Including painting and building sets.” Auton also said” Well you need to have good hearing and understand sound and be able to hear if the sound is too high or if something went wrong.”
Layton’s Stage Crew are trained continuously on the job to give them better experience in the theatre to build sets and run machines needed to run the performances. The ability to respond quickly to instruction is essential for stagehands, the ability to work in silence a silent environment or near-silence while the show is running. Stage Crew help keep our assemblies, live performances, and plays running and becoming a great success.
