Those who participated in Battle of the Bands certainly did not go untouched by the nervousness and excitement that comes with preforming. As they stood in the dark, in front of the crowd, their heads began to pound and their eyes began to hurt as they strained to see the faces before them. No matter how many times they wiped off their hands, they were covered with sweat making it hard to concentrate on the task ahead. Then, in a flash, the spotlights were turned on and the crowd was yelling. This is the experience the performers felt on the night of January 28th in the Layton High Auditorium.
Four bands competed for the title, The Skinny Snobs, The Volunteered, The Dynamics, and The LHS Drumline. Each band was required to perform two numbers. None of the songs performed were original. Some songs performed included oldies such as “Sensation” by Stevie Wonder (The Volunteered) to more modern hits like “Night Changes” by One Direction (The Skinny Snobs). The competition is sponsored every year by The PTSA and the winner received a 200 dollar cash prize and also advances to the
state competition.
Who won, you ask? Well, The Volunteered took the win with they’re funky jazz chords
and rhythms. Jen Wiggins (who plays the piano in the band but also plays some guitar in her free time) said that the band was not planning on playing in the competition but were volunteered by some fellow Lancers and was kind of a last minute thing. You can find The Volunteered practicing early Tuesday mornings in the Mr. Follett’s band room. The band usually plays Jazz music, but also incorporates some rock and swing influences into their music. The group was formed earlier this year with the help of Mr. Follett. All the members of the band play in the school’s jazz band. The next time you can go see The Volunteered will be on Saturday, March 14th when they will be competing in the District portion of The Battle of the Bands in the Davis High auditorium.
Every battle is a victory no matter the outcome. You win you learn, you lose you
learn twice as much. So I give a round of applause to all those who put their
talents out there and gave us your all because the feat of preforming in front
of an audience isn’t an easy one.
